Locative Art

/* about */

Locative art is art that uses locative media, that is, media devices which are both pervasive and context-aware. GPS and mobile phones are examples of locative media.

This website includes five examples of locative art by five different artists or art collectives. The site is intended as an introduction to locative art and a jumping ground for further research. Each piece was chosen for its artistic value, and as an example of a specific manifestation of locative art: narrative, traditional artistic representations, alternative cartography, technology awareness, and gaming. I have listed these categories only to show the breadth of work that is included in locative art. They are not meant to confine the pieces into arbitrary categories. As Drew Hemment wrote in his 2004 essay on Locative Arts, "It is too early to offer a topology of locative media arts, or to tie the field down with strict definitions or borders."
