COURSE PROCEDURES FOR EPSY 493
- The first half of each class will be lecture and
feedback.
- The second half of each class will be a lab where
students are videotaped practicing the skills discussed during lecture and
receiving feedback from peers and instructors.
- Summaries on the Summary Behavior Checklist must contain
verbatim transcripts of every helper response including a check mark under the
category (e.g., attending, open or closed question, encouraging, etc.) of
helpee response. The last column on the Summary is to be used to indicate
whether reflections are at the Basic ("B") or advanced ("A") level of
empathy. Scores of 4 and 5 on the Empathy
Scale reflect basic empathy; scores of 6 and 7 reflect advanced
empathy.
- Summaries must be legible and clear as to where each
intervention begins and ends. The Summary Behavior Checklist is in
Microsoft Word so that you and save a copy to your computer and then fill it
in electronically.
- For those tapes that are being evaluated for a grade,
students must compute "helpee talk time" and include at the bottom of the
Summary.
- Students must recognize that because they are working
with a peer in a "real play" situation that self-disclosure must be
limited. If instructors find that you are divulging information that is
too personal, you will be asked to define and work on another problem.
- The purpose of making audiotapes is NOT to help students
"work through" deeply personnel problems; peers are not therapists.
