Tape Evaluation Procedures

Minimal competency is demonstrated by:

1.    At least 85% of the helper utterances must be either open questions, clarification/reflection, or summarizations.

2.    The helper must use at least four reflections.

3.    The average rating on the empathy scale must be at least 4.5 for all reflections and summarizations.

4.    At least 80% of the helper utterances must be free of all of thefollowing process errors: (a) belittles or criticizes helpee, (b) misses important feelikngs or content, (c) offers advice or solutions, (d) interrupts helpee, or (e) evaluates helpee.

5.    The average rating of all helper utterances on the Verbal Following Rating Scale must be at least 2.5.

6.    The average number of words per helper utterance must be less than 25.

7.    Helper talk time must be less than 35%.  Talk time is computed by dividing helper talk time by helper talk time plus helpee talk time; e.g., if helper talks a total of 10 minutes and the helpee 20 minutes then the percent of helper talk time is .33 (10 [helper talk time]/ 30 [helper talk time added to helpee talk time]).

Students will receive instructor feedback on the Instructor's Evaluation of Tape form.

Empathy Scale

7=Response helps helpee see underlying feelings or thought that were not explicitly expressed.  Goes beyond immediate awareness and adds significant feeling or meaning to helpee statement.

6=Response shows full awareness and understanding of feelings and content that were actually expressed.  Response is interchangeable but wording is more precise and deeper feelings or meanings may be implied or suggested.

5=Response is interchangeable with helpee statement and shows helper understands surface content or feeling accurately.  Attends to and reflects all important feelings and content.

4=Some important clarification/reflections and summarizations are done accurately, but some important feeling, thought, or action is omitted.

3=Response shows partial awareness and understanding of helpee statement.  Important feelings, meanings, or experiences are omitted or distorted, but some minimal aspect of statement is attended to and reflected accurately.

2=Response follows from what helpee says but does not really attend to and reflect accurately.  Any reflections present are distorted and inaccurate.

1=Response is totally distorting and way off base.  Helper is not listening and understanding.

Verbal Content Following Scale (mentioned above)

3=Good:follows from helpee statement completely.

2=Fair: follows in part from helpee statement but goes astray or introduces a different focus.

1=Poor: irrelevant; topic jump; unresponsive to helpee statement.
